la montagne à l’état pur

“The Mountain in it’s Pure state”

Today many of the villagers set off into the Mountians to do a ’spring clean’ after the winter season.

Everyone is split into teams and you cover one area. The Commune of St Gervais covers a vast area, from Le Fayet in the Valley at 500m to the Summit of Mt Blanc at 4808m so there is a lot of area to cover. For the spring clean up they concentrate on the valley and on the ski areas which is still a formidable task.

We chose to help out in Le Betex area, up to Mont Arbois. Teams where dispatched to follow aech of the lift lines, where people often drop rubbish from, as well as each of the pistes. Popular lunch spots where also covered, around the edge of the forests etc. It is staggering just how much rubbish is found, some of it probably mistakenly discarded but lots clearly deliberatly dumped - beer bottles, sandwitch wrapers etc. Cigarette buts being very common under lifts (These can take up to 7 years to degrade in the high mountains).

Our team alone came down with 2 van loads of rubbish! It goes to show how worthwhile this is cleanup is, but also how everyone that uses the mountains, be it skiing in winter or walking in summer must ensure that they drop no litter and leave the mountain as they find it.

The commune organises another cleaqnup after the summer season, an will dispatch teams all the way up Mt Blanc to ensure that even the high Mountains are kept pure.
