Over this weekend I will be trying (weather permitting) to climb the Mettrier Aréte on the Dome De Miage with a friend of mine. Whilst on route I will try to send updates direct to this blog via mobile phone, if it all goes to plan!
The technology is a bit shakey and a whole load of thing could go wrong, not least of which is the weather at the moment, but theoreticaly I should be able to send text updates from the route to the blog directly. Of course there are a number of places where things could go wrong: I may have no reception on the route; I may have no hands free to text!; The SMS gateway may fail; the blogging software may not pick up the messages! So if nothing appears don’t be too surprised!
The updates will only be short, as this is a limitation of text messages that only allows around 160 character per text.
The Route
The route we will try is the Mettrier Aréte on the North West face of the Dome de Miage. This is graded AD+ and should take around 6 hours - which probably means it will take us 10hrs. The route is a rock ridge followed by a 50 degree snow ridge. We intend to finish by traversing over the highest ‘Dome’ at 3673m and down to the Col de Miage where we will probably bivvie for the night near the Durier Refuge.
Bellow are a couple of photo’s showing the route. The Mettrier Aréte is the left hand ridge on the front face. The left hand sky-line will be the descent route, which takes us down to the Col de Miage.
